David Salkin Creative is a studio that redefines surface design through an innovative approach rooted in visual order and pattern-making. By mastering traditional grid systems while exploring the transformative act of “breaking the grid,” David Salkin ventures beyond convention to create new systems of design that are dynamic, balanced, and deeply engaging. Each project embodies a commitment to discovery, experimentation, and a rich visual narrative, challenging the boundaries of material and pattern to bring artful, cohesive environments to life.
Our Exhibitions program features a rotating series of thought-provoking presentations that delve into nontraditional artistic practices and significant moments in art history. Currently, we are showcasing Art In Chicago: 1995 – 2025 by Gareth Kaye, which explores the evolution of Chicago's art scene through ephemera and interviews, offering an evolving narrative of the city's contemporary art history. This program invites viewers to engage with and contribute to the ongoing dialogue about what defines and sustains art in Chicago.
Breaking the grid.
As a surface designer passionate about creating new systems of visual order, breaking the grid signifies both rebellion and innovation — and captures the moment when I venture beyond convention towards experimentation and originality.
Over the course of my career, I have continued to master the art of traditional grid-based design—a structured, methodical approach that ensures balance, harmony, and predictability. The grid, with its orderly rows and columns, has been the backbone of my work, providing a reliable framework that guides the placement of elements and ensures a cohesive aesthetic.
As I have delved deeper into my craft, however, I have begun to perceive the grid not just as a tool, but as a boundary—one that, while useful, can also limit creativity and stifle innovation. I recognize that to completely embrace visual order, I must know how to work within the confines of the grid and also know how and when to transcend it.
Breaking the grid, then, is a transformative act for me. It is the moment when I consciously step outside my comfort zone to reimagine and reconfigure the grid to create new patterns that challenge the status quo.
In practice, breaking the grid manifests in asymmetrical layouts, unexpected alignments, and dynamic compositions that draw the eye in new and intriguing ways. I experiment with overlapping elements, varied spacing, and irregular shapes, all while maintaining an underlying sense of cohesion and balance. My goal is to create designs that feel fresh and innovative yet still communicate effectively and resonate.
This approach requires a deep understanding of both the principles of design and the specific needs of the project at hand. It demands a keen eye for detail, a willingness to take risks, and the confidence to trust my instincts. Breaking the grid is not about rejecting the rules but about knowing them so well that I can bend and reshape them to serve a higher creative vision.
For me, breaking the grid is an ongoing journey of discovery and growth. It is about pushing boundaries, embracing change, and continually seeking new ways to express ideas and tell visual stories. It is a testament to the power of design as a dynamic, evolving practice—one that is constantly reinventing itself and challenging our perceptions of what is possible.
